Housing queues in Stockholm

There are two main student housing queues in Stockholm: the Stockholm Housing Agency (Stockholms stads bostadsförmedling) and Stiftelsen Stockholms Studentbostäder (SSSB).

The Stockholm Housing Agency is the municipal housing queue in Stockholm. You can join the queue from the age of 18 and it costs 200 SEK/year (2019). During 2018 the Stockholm Housing Agency allocated 2,417 student apartments and the average queue time was 5.5 years. If you are between 18 and 25 you can also apply for youth apartments with the Stockholm Housing Agency.

The Stockholm Housing Agency does not have a separate student housing queue, everyone that is registered is in the same queue. This is part of the reason why their queue time is longer than for example SSSB’s (see below). If you get allocated student aapartment you keep your queue days and are able to use them at a later time to be allocated a regular rental apartment.

Stiftelsen Stockholms studentbostäder is the largest student housing company in Sweden. They have around 8 000 student accommodations and was founded by SSCO in 1959. You can join the queue from the age of 18, but after 90 days you need to prove that you are a member of one of SSCO’s member unions. There is no fee to queue with SSSB.

During 2018 the average queue time for SSSB was around 11 months for a corridor room and 2-3 years for a student apartment.
